Ashikos are an African handdrum which is tall and conical in shape. I receive rough-carved ashiko shells made in Ghana from a solid piece of tweneboa wood, the same wood I use for most of my djembes.
I do all the finish work myself, carving the wood to the proper thickness, shaping the bearing edge (top rim) and applying a natural oil finish to protect and enhance the beauty of the wood. My ashikos are available in 2 tuning styles: traditional rope tuning, or bolt tuning. Rope tuning employs the traditional Mali weave, which is beautiful and achieves nice even tension on the head. Bolt tuning uses black iron hardware, handmade specifically for this purpose. Bolt tuning is attractive and a somewhat more simple and quicker method of tuning.
Please note that my drums are available with goatskin, deer, or cowskin, thinner to thicker respectively. Thicker skins provide deeper, more mellow tones, especially desirable on larger drums.
