My name is Chris Bittner, thank you for visiting my web site! Let me tell you a little about how DRUMWORKS came to be…

When I was a small child, I began to notice the beauty of wooden things. So many things are made of wood; houses, furniture, utensils, tools, and so on. I liked to look at wooden things, touch wooden things, and soon I made wooden things. My father taught me how to use tools and I gained great satisfaction from any small project.

During those early years, I also learned to love rhythm. I'll blame this on my brother Pete. Pete went through a stage when he just couldn't stop drumming away on everything. I had to copy my big brother and I've been drumming ever since!

In the early nineties, I took up wood sculpture (click on photo left for larger image) as an outlet for my creativity. I love 3-dimensional art, and of course wood is my primary medium.

Also in the early nineties, I began to attend community drum circles in Nashville, Tennessee. (I lived there a short time, otherwise I have always lived in Central Pennsylvania). Dozens of people would meet every Sunday in Centennial Park with drums and all manner of percussion instruments. I played buckets and wooden blocks for years until I got my first djembe. Since then I have played African drum/dance ensembles and many less formal groups.

In 1999 I made my first djembe. Upon completion of that drum, it became magically apparent to me that drum making could be my full time endeavor. And so, DRUMWORKS is born, an effort to love my work and provide people with the instruments so they can enjoy rhythm as much as I do.

Drumming is healthy and healing for your body and spirit. Drumming helps bring people together for a positive, creative community activity. I hope you will create a drum circle where you live, all it takes is a few people and a regular time and place.
